How to Replace an audi tt key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available, especially in the case of the Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your vehicle. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points.
