How to Replace an audi a5 Key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor Replace sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
